MAJ Terry Yi McCray, 39, of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Major Terry McCray was born on the 4th of July 1983 in South Korea and was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He earned an Associate' s degree in Computer Networking from Devry University and a Bachelor's degree from Colorado Technical University before attending Officer Candidate School in 2007 where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
After completing the Officer Basic Course and Signal Basic Officer Leader Course in 2007 Major McCray was assigned to the 72nd Signal Battalion in Germany where he served as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Network Systems Engineer. After completing his tour in Germany, Major McCray attended the Signal Captains Career Course and the Information Systems Officer Functional Area Course at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He was then assigned to Fort Liberty where he served in multiple assignments to include 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division as the Brigade Information Systems Manager; 3rd Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces Command as the Group Information Management Officer; 112th Signal Battalion (Special Operations) (Airborne) as the Battalion Information Management Officer. Major McCray briefly departed Fort Liberty to serve an overseas tour in the 160th Theater Signal Brigade as the Network Systems Engineer. He then returned to Fort Liberty to serve in his most recent assignment at the 82nd Airborne Division Chief of Information Systems.
Major McCray's deployment history includes Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Kuwait, and Bulgaria.
His military education includes Officer Candidate School, Basic Officer Leader Course, Signal Officer Leaders Course, Signal Captains Career Course, Joint Command and Control Communications Staff Course, Information Systems Officer Course, Basic Airborne Course, and the Advanced Airborne Jumpmaster Course.
Major McCray's Civilian Education includes a Master of Science Degree in Information Assurance from University of Maryland University College, a Bachelor of Arts in Information Systems Management degree from Colorado Technical University, and an Associate of Arts Degree in Computer Networking from Devry University.
His awards and decorations include; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (5 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), The Meritorious Unit Commendation Award, the Army Superior Unit Award, the National Defense Service Medal, The Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, The Army Service Ribbon, The Overseas Ribbon with Numeral 3, the NATO medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Master Parachutist Badge.
He is survived by his wife Cortney McCray; daughter, Allenna McCray; parents, Michael McCray and Son Hwa McCray; brothers, Michael McCray Jr., Brian McCray and many extended family members.
A unit memorial service will be held at the All American Chapel on July 20 from 1000-1200.
A full honors burial ceremony will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
