Retired MSG Winfred King, 87, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 in Cape Fear Valley Hospital.
Winfred was born on August 31, 1925 in Fayette County, West Virginia to the late Ralph and Vernie Marshall King. He joined the Marines in 1943 and participated in action on Okinawa in 1945 . After discharge in 1946 from the Marines, he married his hometown sweetheart Joyce in 1947 and joined the 82 nd Airborne Division. He served in Korea and the Dominican Republic and retired from the 18 th Airborne Corps in 1967. After retiring from the Army, he went to work for Fayetteville Technical Community College and retired from there as the Financial Aid Director in 1989. Winfred loved God, his country and his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Joyce King of the home; son, John L. King and his wife Deva of Clayton, NC; two daughters, Connie King Peebles and her husband Pete of Fayetteville, NC and Cheryl King-Vallejo of Grosse Point, MI; two grandchildren, Chris L. Peebles of Fayetteville, NC and Catherine J. Vallejo of Grosse Point, MI; one great grandchild, Elizabeth Peebles of Fayetteville, NC; sister, Betty Gallihugh of Anderson, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for the family will be 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, January 14, 2013 at LaFayette Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6651 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be 12 Noon Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with Reverend Archie Barringer officiating.
