SSG William Frederick Stanley, (Ret), also known as ‟Stan or Renegade”, 89, of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, July 2, 2023 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
William or Stan as he is known was born in Allendale County, SC on May 21, 1934, son to the late George Frank Stanley and Janie Sanders Stanley. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Opal Stanley, a brother, Eugene Stanley and 2 sisters, Joan Stanley and Frances ‟Patsy” Stanley.
SSG Stanley or Renegade as he was known in the Military joined the US Army at the age of 17 and served many tours of duty to include Korea and Vietnam. SSG Stanley was in the Special Forces through most of his Military Career and retired from Active-Duty service in 1972. He was a Mason, a Scottish Rite, Knight Templar, and a Shriner. He was an avid hunter and held his permanent Hunting and Fishing License through the State of North Carolina. He also ran the Leatherman shop at the Bragg Blvd. Flea Market in Fayetteville. Stan was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
SSG Stanley received the following awards and decorations for his honorable and faithful service: The Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Overseas Service Bars and the Master Parachutist Badge.
Stan is survived by his sons, Freddie Stanley and wife Connie of Islandton, SC, Ronnie Stanley and wife Diane of Varnville, SC; a daughter, Donna Stanley White and husband Wes of Yemassee, SC; brothers, John Stanley and Manuel Stanley, both of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; his extended family, Pamela Cherry and the late, 1SG Theodore Arnold Cherry, Mark and Cheri Cherry, all of Fayetteville and a host of extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM, Monday, July 24, 2023 at Crystal Spring Chapel Church, 1400 Crystal Springs Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
Funeral Services will begin at 12:30 PM following the Visitation.
Graveside Services with Full Military Honors will follow at 2:00 PM in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
