Retired Major, Thad Bernard Bass Sr., 81, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 in Womack Army Medical Center.
Major Bass was born in Mecklenburg County, NC on March 19, 1934 to the late Walter and Rozella Combs Bass. He entered the US Army out of High School serving tours in Korea and Vietnam. During his 31 year career in the Army, he served in many countries as a Topographical Engineer. He married his loving wife, Ilse while he was stationed in Germany and served overseas for 17 years. Major Bass was a Mason and received his credentials while stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC. After retirement, they loved to travel in their RV visiting many places and were members of the Coastal Tarheels RV Club, Fayetteville Berets and the Active Duty and Retired RV Club out of Pensacola, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Ilse M. Bass of the home; sons, Thad Bernard Bass Jr. of Charlotte, Markus Hertaner of Germany, Harold M. Bass of Charlotte and Anthony E. Bass of Mt. Holly; daughter, Simone E. Werner of Germany; brother, Samuel M. Bass of Fayetteville; nieces, Kim McClamahan and Deborah Foster, both of Fayetteville; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Village Baptist Church, 906 S. McPherson Church Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28303 with Dr. Bruce Martin officiating.
Burial will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
