Sgm John Burns Calton (Retired)

Fayetteville

U.S. Army SGM (ret.) John B. Calton, 77, passed peacefully on 05 Jan 2022.  Born 26 Aug 1944 in Floyd County, Kentucky, "Johnny" was a little league baseball player, attended Lexington Catholic High School, and worked for IBM before honorably serving over 20 years in the U.S. Army at Ft. Riley, Ft Campbell, Ft Knox, Wurzburg Germany, Ft Bragg, and Washington DC.

SGM Calton served with the utmost distinction and received the following awards in the military: Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal W/Bronze Service Star, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, (6th Award), Meritorious Service Medal, (1OLC), Army Commendation Medal, (3OLC), Army Achievement Medal, (1OLC), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3) and the Legion of Merit Award.

Always loving the XVII ABN Corps and 82D AD, the family settled in Fayetteville.  Forever the Recruiter and Family Advocate, John dedicated anther 20 years of Civil Service to Ft Bragg as a Mortuary Affairs Officer to serve the families of those that made the ultimate sacrifice and will never be forgotten.  After retirement, he continued to assist the local community at LaFayette Funeral Home as a Family and Military Advocate and Advisor.

John was proceeded in death by his parents, Hargis and Mousie Calton, brother, Dale Calton, and sister Janice Peters.  He is survived by is beloved wife, Freida Calton, daughter, Sybrina Brogan, her husband Micheal, and two grand children, Jonathan and Sara Brogan, as well as, brother, Bobby Calton and sister Shelby Reed.

John loved the University of Kentucky and was an avid follower of the football and basketball programs.  He will always be remembered as a happy and loving man, friend, and help to anyone in need.

Public viewing and visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, January 13, 2022 at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28304.

Funeral Services will be 12:00 Noon Friday, January 14, 2022 at LaFayette Funeral Home.
Graveside Services with Full Military Honors will follow at 2:00 PM in Sandhills State Veteran's Cemetery, 8220 Bragg Blvd, Fort Bragg, NC 28310.

In lieu of gifts, the family requests donations be made in John's memory to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Foundation at fallenheroesfund.org which serves to treat United States military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS).
