Congressional Medal Of Honor Recipient, CPL Rodolfo “Rudy” Perez Hernandez, 82, passed away December 21, 2013 at Womack Army Medical Center.

CPL Hernandez was born in Colton, CA on April 14, 1931 to the late David and Guadalupe Hernandez. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Hernandez and a sister, Delphina Lopez.

CPL Hernandez grew up in California and joined the United States Army in 1949. In honor of his heroic action during the Korean War, CPL Hernandez was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman in April, 1952. Following this award, CPL Hernandez devoted much of his time to wounded veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars working for the Veterans Administration.  CPL Hernandez was honored last month as the Grand Marshall of the 2013 Fayetteville Veterans Day parade.

He is survived by his wife, Denzil P. Hernandez of Fayetteville; his first wife, Bertha Hernandez of Canoga Park, CA; son, Rudy Hernandez and his wife Annlisa of Canoga Park, CA; daughters, Martha Reclusado of Fayetteville and Ana Hernandez of Olalla, WA; brothers, Tom Hernandez of San Jose, CA, David Hernandez of Tracy, CA. and John Hernandez of Eugene, OR; sisters, Rose Lango of Bakersfield, CA and Rebecca Lozano of Upland, CA; grandchildren, Jessica Hernandez, Leila Bjork and husband Dave, MM2 James Weber, Diana Weber and Brandon Goldberg; great grandchildren, Marcos Moreno and Brandon Franco.

Visitation will be held 5:00-9:00 PM Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Covenant Love Church, 420 Dunn Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28312.

Funeral Service will be 12:00 Noon Monday, January 6, 2014 at Covenant Love Church with Pastor Al Brice officiating.

Burial, with Full Military Honors, will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2014 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, 400 Murchison Rd, Spring Lake, NC 28390.
