Civilian Obituary

SSG Nikolay Matteys, 33, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021.

Nikolay was born in Russia, Norilsk on 16th of February 1988. Growing up he was calm, and surrounded by love. At the age of six he started pursuing education on two fronts; general and music. After finishing general education along with musical he moved on to go to college of arts. While living in Norilsk he attended the local church “Primirenye” meaning Reconciliation in English. He served the Lord with his musical talent of playing piano, saxophone, and guitar. He was very kind. Nikolay loved his parents, sisters and later his nephew and nieces. For two years he went to a Russian American Christian University in Moscow. When the institute closed Nikolay was called on to serve in Russian army for one year. After completing his service in the Military, he worked in administration for a Moscow hotel and as a restaurant server. While working he was able to pursue and acquire license as a professional masseuse. He was a very open minded person.

In June of 2012 Nikolay moved to United States, while living here he attended an English school, after one year of strengthening his English skills, he passed his GED exam. While doing so Nikolay served in a worship ministry at Calvary Chapel Laguna Creek, and taking on any job assignment he could take on. In March of 2014 Nikolay joined US Army, and in February of 2016 he married Felicitee April. A little over a year in May of 2017, Felicitee gave birth to their son Isaac. After two years the family had to split up. Nikolay stayed in contact with his son to the last day. Nikolay really missed his home country and really wanted to come visit his mother and sister. On the 16th of October early in the morning Nikolay Matteys was found no longer breathing.

He is survived by his mother, sisters, nephew, nieces, and his ex-wife Felicitee and their son Isaac.

A Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28304 with CH (CPT) Travis Dalsis officiating.

Burial will follow at a later date in Russia.

Military Obituary

SSG Matteys was born in Norilsk, Russia in 1988. He entered active duty service on 17 March 2014 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he completed Basic Training and then Advanced Individual Training as a Combat Medic at Fort Sam Houston. SSG Matteys completed the Civil Affairs Assessment and Selection in 2019, the Civil Affairs Qualification Course in 2020, then was awarded the MOS 38B - Civil Affairs Specialist. In 2021 he completed the Special Operations Combat Medic Course and the Civil Affairs Medical Sergeant Course and was assigned to the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (SO) (A) in 2021 as a 38BW4.

SSG Matteys’ assignments include: Heath Care Specialist and Ambulance Driver, HHC 1-505th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Health Care Sergeant and Vehicle Commander, 296 BSB, 1-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Joint Base Lewis McCord, Washington; Civil Affairs Medical Sergeant, D Co, 92d CA BN (SO) (A), 95th CA BDE (SO) (A), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SSG Matteys’ military education includes the Basic Leaders Course; Advanced Leaders Course; U.S. Army Airborne School; Civil Affairs Selection and Assessment (CAAS); Civil Affairs Qualification Course (CAQC); Special Operations Combat Medic Course (SOCM); Civil Affairs Medical Sergeant Course (CAMS); and the Brigade Combat Team Trauma Training Course.

SSG Matteys holds an Associates Degree in General Studies from Central Texas College.

SSG Matteys’ awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster); Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons (Numeral 2); Army Service Ribbon; Parachutist Badge.

SSG Matteys is survived by his mother, sisters, nephew, nieces, and his ex-

wife Felicitee and their son Isaac.
