Kurt Erich Metz

It is with great sadness that the family of Kurt Erich Metz (Opa) announces his passing, on the morning of Thursday, May 30, 2019 at approximately 7:00 AM, at the age of 88 years. After a short battle with cancer, Kurt passed away at his daughter’s home in Fayetteville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his second wife Doris Metz. He is survived by his first wife Charlotte Bönsel; seven brothers and sisters in Germany; eight children (seven in Germany and one in the U.S.); seventeen grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Germany; and twenty-one, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-children in the U.S.
Loved ones that will miss Kurt (Opa) until they meet again are his brothers Bruno, Rudi, Heinz, and Helmud; his sisters Wilma, Anita, and Karin; his children Hans, Monika, Petra, Mario, Andrea, Manuela, Thomas, and Daniel; His grandchildren, Michael, Margit, Marsha, Michelle, Justin, Marcus, Natascha, Andre, Dennis, Shalina, Appolonia, Cindy, Kevin, Thomas, Melanie, Sascha, Leander, and Leila; his great-grandchildren Denny, Silia, Caleb, Elaina, Melody, Antoine, Asante, Curtis, Nathan, Nadine, Casius, Mishka, Jacob, Indee, and Alexander; and his great-great-grandchildren Zaiden, Trevon, Janelle, Janessa, and Nadiyah.Loved ones that cleared the path for Kurt (Opa) are his brothers Fritz and Hermann and his sisters Gerlinde and Waltraud.
Kurt (Opa), who is the son of Wilhem and Anna Berta (Deubel) Metz and is lovingly known as Opa by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, was born in Linkenheim, Germany on September 28, 1930. He lived during difficult times in Germany. After finishing school, he began a career as a skilled plasterer. He taught the trade to his son Hans, and was followed into the business by two other sons, Mario and Thomas, and his grandson Justin.
Kurt (Opa) moved from Karlsruhe, Germany to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1984 where he lived for 35 years with his wife Doris until her death. In January 2018, he moved to Fayetteville, N.C. to live with daughter, Monika.
Kurt (Opa) was a kind-hearted man, who was loved by those who knew him. He liked helping people in need, and he loved animals. He thoroughly enjoyed feeding birds and talking to neighbors and passersby. He was an avid fussball (soccer) fan and, while he rooted for the German National team, he loved to watch a great match between any two teams.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, June 30, 2019 at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28304.
