John Whittington

Retired Staf SGT John Thomas Whittington, 83, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Whittington served his country in the United States Army for 20 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was also retired from civil service at Fort Bragg. John enjoyed fishing and working in the yard.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hildegard “Hilde” Whittington of Fayetteville; his sister, Elizabeth Harris of Milton, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Gisela Stay of Frankfort, Germany; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Cumberland Memorial Gardens Chapel in Fayetteville.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565; or to a charity of one’s choice.
