First Sgt. Russell Ryan Bell, 37, of Spring Lake, N.C. died August 2, 2012 while conducting an independent dismounted patrol when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated near Zharay, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.
He was assigned to the 1/508th 4BCT 82nd Airborn Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. and was deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

He will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Surviving First Sgt. Bell is his Wife, Latoya Bell of Spring Lake; Son, Gage Bell of Spring Lake; his mother, Cynthia Holcomb and her husband Steve of Ohio; his father, Jim Bell and his wife Elizabeth of Texas; two brothers, Mathew Bell of Utah and Michael Bell of Texas; a sister, Andrea Baird of Texas.
At family request, all services will be private.
